Andrew and The Angels of Epistemology
There was a band in Raleigh in the 80's named The Angels of Epistemology. All the scene folk spoke of them with reverence, and the coolest people had fliers or posters advertising their shows hanging in their homes. I think I saw them play once, at a show with a lot of different bands, where the price of admission included a set of 7-inch records, one by each of the bands performing. I think The Angels were part of that. I think that was 1988.
My friend Chris W. collected people. One person he collected was Andrew, a student at State from - I think - Baltimore. Andrew liked the Butthole Surfers, and anyone who liked the Butthole Surfers was all right by Chris' standards. But Andrew was odd. He wasn't scarey or anything, he was just very quiet, and when he did speak he reacted to things in unusual ways. Most of the time this was kind of funny.
Eventually Andrew got in trouble with the university for letting another fellow, who was not a student, live with him in his dorm room. After that I can't remember exactly how events unfolded - it seems I heard about it all later after the fact. I think Andrew had some sort of breakdown, and whether there was psychedelic aid to this I can't recall. As I write this I'm begining to wonder ifI remember this well enough to even write about it.
I believe though that Andrew went home to Baltimore prematurely, and whether the school sent him or if his parents recalled him, I'm not sure. I do remember that Andrew told his parents that everything was the fault of The Angels of Epistemology, people he had never even met. I think Andrew said that the band had kidnapped him, like they were some sort of neo-Manson Family. Andrew's parents were wealthy, and they had clout, and the band very nearly got into very serious trouble.
Andrew recanted at the last minute.
This is where all the nostalgia leads . . . receovered memories . . . more likely recovered gossip.
The Angels of Episemology were a very quirky band. You can listen to a few of their tracks here.
